Thanks to advances in modern dental materials and techniques, esthetically attractive materials are now available to restore and bond on teeth to match their natural appearance. Today, more than ever patients are asking for tooth colored fillings instead of traditional silver colored (amalgam) fillings because they want their teeth to look healthy and natural when they talk, laugh and smile.
Not only do composite fillings look real, they don’t contain mercury, and require less removal of tooth structure to hold them in place because they are adhesively bonded to the tooth. This bonding helps strengthen the tooth, holding it together, and prolonging its life. Composites are preferable for small to medium sized restorative situations or teeth that need minimal addition to restore chips, worn areas or close spaces. However, if the affected tooth is severely damaged or subject to heavy chewing pressure another type of restoration may be recommended.
